Kim Gil-Yong

Cho Byong-Hee
Abstract
Koreans show rather high trust in their doctors, while doctors worry about distrust by patients. This paper aims at revealing the relationship between trust in doctors and social factors such as social capital, empowerment, health care utilization. The data of 1006 respondents nationally collected in 2009 was analyzed. The major findings are as follows:
First, as the level of respondent¡¯s social capital measured by interpersonal contacts and general trust in people heightened, the trust in doctors became stronger. Second, as the respondents were fully aware of the significance of public speech, the trust in doctors became stronger. Third, as they expected more of doctor¡¯s ability of communication and friendliness, they trusted in doctors more and more. Fourth, as they experienced any difficulties in utilizing hospitals, their trust in doctors declined. Even if the respondents expectation of more frequent communications with doctors is not usually realized in hospitals, they maintain their trust in doctors. Such trust in doctors was related strongly with the general satisfaction with health care utilization, not with the satisfaction with communication. It means that the core of high trust in doctors was the confidence in health care system to guarantee the access to health services, not the real trust in intimate doctor-patient relationship.
